North Simcoe Muskoka Infection Control Network (NSMICN): Geography

The North Simcoe Muskoka Local Health Integrated Network (LHIN 12) serves a community of 477,000 people in an area of approximately 9,200 square kilometers. Included are the District of Muskoka, north Simcoe County and the eastern portion of Grey County. The highest population density is in the urban areas between Innisfil to the south and Orillia to the north. The remaining population (approximately 57%) is scattered throughout in communities ranging in size from 200 to 18,300 persons. Of note, the North Simcoe - Muskoka LHIN has a higher hospitalization rate, and a slightly higher senior population relative to the provincial average.

Our geographic area of Ontario includes seven acute care facilities ranging in size from 36 to 313 acute care beds and bassinettes; one 250 bed psychiatric facility, which includes 126 maximum security beds; 2986 long term care beds in 25 facilities (78.5% in Simcoe, 21.5% in Muskoka); one Community Care Access Centers (CCAC). Our LHIN aligns closely with the boundaries of the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. Also in the region are two Federal Penitentiaries and the Central North Correctional Centre, with a combined approximate capacity of 1800 inmates.
