*FEBRILE RESPIRATORY ILLNESS (FRI)
Adenovirus infections, Bronchitis / bronchiolitis, Cold / Rhinovirus, Croup, Haemophilus influenzae type b, *Influenza, Influenza-like illness (ILI), Parainfluenza virus, *Pertussis (Whooping cough), Pharyngitis, Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), pneumonia

DROPLET and CONTACT

Droplet
Direct and indirect contact
Infectious Material:
Respiratory secretions
Duration of Additional Precautions:
Discontinue precautions when any of the following
criteria are met:
a) An etiologic diagnosis that does not require Droplet and Contact Precautions
b) Clinical improvement on empiric therapy
c) An alternate diagnosis (i.e. non-infectious)
Signs & Symptoms:
Fever > 38 degrees Celsius (or a history of fever, chills or shakes in the last 24 hours) AND new or worsening cough or shortness of breath. May also include stuffy nose, sore throat, wheezing and headache
Comments:
  • Elderly or immunocompromised clients / patients may not have a febrile response
  • For a patient with a new cough, fever AND travel history to a country with a health alert OR contact with someone with a travel history to a country with a health alert must be reported to the local Medical Officer of Health
  • Haemophilus influenzae type b reportable only when invasive
  • Notify infection control
* Ontario: All institutional outbreaks of respiratory illness are reportable to Medical Officer of Health
